Shapes for toddlers

These are the sixteen shapes in Kidster: flat ones like the circle and the hexagon, and solid ones like the cube and the cone. Each is spoken by a real voice. Tap one to hear it. Shapes are easiest to learn in the hand, so the best use of this page is next to a box of blocks.

All of these are free in Kidster.

Teaching tips

  • Begin with the circle, the square and the triangle. They are the shapes a child can trace with a finger and find around the house.
  • Hold the real thing while you say the word: a ball for a sphere, a block for a cube, a party hat for a cone.
  • Go on shape hunts. A plate is a circle, a door is a rectangle, a slice of cheese is often a triangle.
  • Solid shapes come later than flat ones, and that is normal. A three-year-old who says “ball” for a sphere has it right.
