Colors for toddlers

These are the thirteen colors in Kidster, each spoken by a real voice. Tap one to hear it. Colors are an odd thing to learn: a child has to work out that “red” is the same on a ball, a car and a strawberry, and that it is not the ball’s name. Hearing the word many times, on many different things, is what does it.

All of these are free in Kidster.

Teaching tips

  • Name one color at a time, on things your child is already holding. “Red cup” teaches more than a chart of ten colors.
  • Start with two that look nothing alike, such as red and blue, before you add a third.
  • Ask “where is the red one?” before “what color is this?”. Pointing comes months before saying.
  • Expect mix-ups for a long time. Most children sort colors well before they name them reliably, often not until three.
